*Mayor’s Corner – May*
What’s Happening in Shell Lake!!
Well, I think we can officially say the snow is gone, and the great news is that the Ice is OUT on our beautiful lake! Yahoo!! It’s been a long time coming. Even though the winters are not as harsh as they use to be, it sure is nice to know that soon our summer clothes will be replacing our down filled coats, wool sweaters, and turtlenecks!
April showers bring May flowers…and now that we are looking into the Month of May, we hopefully will soon be experiencing the beauty of Mother Nature with fresh blooms of flowers, and even the new buds on the trees. Speaking of flowers, the Shell Lake Lion’s Club and the City of Shell Lake are working on the Downtown Basket Project. This project offers you the opportunity to purchase a basket in memory of or in honor of someone special to you. These flower baskets hang throughout the city. It is a beautiful addition to the city, as they grow and blossom all summer long. You may purchase a full basket for $90, or a half basket for $45.
It is asked that you make your donation before May 31st. AND your contribution is tax-deductible. You can make check payable to Shell Lake Lions Flower Fund and drop off payments at City Hall. This is such a worthwhile project, a wonderful way to remember someone special and help beautify the city as well.
City of Shell Lake is still in need of Lifeguards for the beach area. You will need to be Red Cross Certified, that the city will pay for, and we will be paying $15.50 per hour. If you know of someone who would be interested, please have them either call or stop by at City Hall for more information. You can reach us at 715-468-7679. I sure hope we can fill this position, otherwise our beach will not have a lifeguard this summer.
The Art Center will be having their 3rd annual Morpheus Spring Gala on Saturday May 3rd from 6:00-9:30 PM! If you have never attended this, please take the time this year to do so. It is so much fun, with music, dancing, and food. As well as ample opportunities to purchase items to help with raising money for our beloved Art Center! Some pretty exciting events will be coming our way with the new build and renovation of the Art Center, so please come on Saturday May 3rd to hear about it, and have some fun at the same time.
Were you aware that on June 13th, The American Cancer Society will be having their annual Walk For The Cure right here in Shell Lake? There are all kinds of opportunities for you to participate in this very worthwhile event. There will be a walk/run this year that will start at 7:00PM, that will be in honor of those who have had cancer. There will be luminarias to help light the way along the path that you will see on your return to the beach area. These luminaria’s can be purchased with a recommended $10 donation, and can be individualized to your loved ones, again in honor/support/memory of them. We have these at City Hall if you are interested in purchasing one. We even have some that are already made, and you just put the name of the person you are honoring on it. We also will have some luminarias at the event that you can purchase as well. If you are interested in forming your own team, you can go to the web site(relayforlife.org/washburncounty.wi) and sign up you and your friends to help raise money. This event is even more fun when you join friends and neighbors in this noble cause. Hope to see you on the 13th of June.
I feel the need to mention, one thing that we all have, and that is a Mother. May 11th is Mother’s Day. If you are fortunate to still have your mom, lucky you! If not, you are fully aware of the heartbreak of losing a mom. Mother’s Day is a wonderful day to celebrate the person who gave you your name, the color of your eyes, gave you your first kiss, and loves/loved you unconditionally. On Mother’s Day we honor the person who nurture, guide, and inspire us. Thank you to all the incredible moms for being beacons of love and support. To all the amazing Mom’s out there, HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! Your tireless efforts, unconditional love and unwavering support make a difference in the lives of your loved ones.
Dates To Remember:

May 26th Memorial Day (City Hall Closed)
I would like to close this May Mayor’s Column with a word or two about Memorial Day. It is this day, that we Honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and country. May we never forget the sacrifices of those who served our nation. To the families of fallen heroes, we’re thinking of you today, and every day. May the love and support of those around you bring comfort on this Memorial Day. May we find peace and gratitude as we remember the brave individuals who served and sacrificed.
Peace…..
Mayor Rowie Hansberger
