What’s Happening in Shell Lake!!

Holy Cats….where in the world did Summer go???  As I write this, Labor Day is this weekend already.  It’s such a fun holiday, and the Chamber is planning so many events with Town and Country days. I hope that as you read this, you have some memories of the activities that you may have had with this past weekend.

With Fall quietly approaching us, we look forward to the start of school, and with that, the reminder of the safety of our children as they wait for their bus.  Please be mindful of the safety rules that relate to the onboarding and departure of our children on and off the school busses. Just as a reminder, from the DOT on safety rules with school buses: STOP ARM LAWS: Drivers must stop for a stopped school bus with flashing red lights. Remain stopped at least 20 feet away until the lights are off and the bus resumes motion. It is illegal for you to pass a school bus while the stop-arm is extended and the red lights are flashing. You are required to yield the right-of-way and stop for school buses when approaching a school bus from any direction when the school bus is displaying flashing red lights.  When a school bus ahead starts flashing its yellow warning lights, you must slow down and prepare to stop. These lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children.  We all know how precious these children are to all of us, lets work really hard to keep them safe!

FUN FACT: Why yellow color for school buses? Yellow is one of the most visible colors to the human eye.  Studies show that people can notice yellow even in their peripheral vision better than any other color. It is also used in traffic signals, where a yellow light signals drivers to slow down.

It has been a long time coming, but I am excited to let you all know that Carribean Coffee Shop is now OPEN!  It is located on 28 5th Avenue, downtown Shell Lake.  They will be open Monday-Saturday 5am-5pm!  Closed on Sunday.  This adventure started 7.5 years ago with the purchase of the building.  Carri Rohow and her husband Steve asked their children, what does Shell Lake need, and they promptly responded “A coffee shop”!  During reconstruction they faced several health issues that they needed to overcome.  Carri states that she started praying to GOD, hoping that he would provide her with a company that she could make a difference, and he did!  She has teamed up with HOPE COFFEE, a coffee company with a heart for missions.  For every bean that is purchased from HOPE COFFEE; it is making a difference in providing clean water wells in villages.  They are building orphanages for children that have lost their parents due to the disease, as well as building and staffing hospitals for the sick, and shelters for the homeless.  Carri states this is an amazing opportunity to have a part in the mission of HOPE COFFEE.  She has partnered with HOPE COFFEE to make a difference not only in Honduras and Mexico, but also here in little Shell Lake WI.

There is  a pleather of items on the menu, including fresh homemade bakery items, and of course many delicious coffee’s to chose from.  I actually visited the coffee shop on opening day, Friday August 29th, and had their veggie/egg dish.  It was delicious!  The coffee shop is beautifully decorated, as well as very welcoming!  When you have a moment, stop down, and take a moment to check out the new coffee shop, grab a cup of coffee, maybe a sandwich, you will be glad that you did! As a side note; Hope Coffee can be purchased through Carribean Coffee Shop.

Carribean Coffee Shop Mission statement is: Making a difference one bean at a time.

Exciting news for the Shell Lake Art Center!  Just in, they will be having their renovation ground breaking on Thursday September 11th at 2:00PM. This is a huge event for the Art Center, a lot of hard work, and many hours of fund raising has gone into this project thus far.  Stay turn thru the coming year on updates on the progress of this great adventure.

Dates to remember:

September 8th : 7:00 pm City Hall Meeting

September 11th :  Shell Lake Art Center start date for renovation ground breaking on new facility

September 22nd : First Day of Autumn

The term “fall” originated in the 17th century in England, where it was used to describe the season between summer and winter.  One theory is that the term “fall” refers to the falling of leaves from trees during the autumn season.  Another theory suggests that “fall” might be related to the harvest season, when crops would “fall “into place or be gathered in.

As the leaves begin to change colors and the cool, crisp air sets in, take a moment in your busy schedule to appreciate the beauty of Fall. Whether you are taking a walk in the woods, sipping apple cider, or cozying up with a good book, make the most of this special season.  Take this time to truly enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

Peace, and remember, always be humble and kind.
